Hide files from Android Gallery and public view

Hide files from Android Gallery and public viewOne thing Android does very well is indexing files and folders. This makes searching for the files not only easy, but very fast too. However, everything is indexed unless a rule is set in the particular folder. Generally, Android assumes files that begin with a period ( . ) as hidden files. But what if you want to hide other files that do not start with a period? This is what you have to do.

1. Use a file manager to access the folder containing the files that you don’t want to show.

2. Create a new text document in this folder (next to the file that you want to protect).

3. Without filling any content in the text file, rename the filename to “.nomedia” (without the apostrophes).

Thats it. Now the files that reside at the same level as this .nomedia file will not be visible to public. You can still access them using a filemanager, but other applications such as the gallery etc will not be able to access the files. This is particularly useful when you start seeing games images in your gallery or even your music album art which are ruining your personal pictures collection.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Shahz, it does help me to get rid of unwanted pictures in my gallery.

I am using Garmin-Asus A10, I want to hide the voice of garmin app from my music library but could not find where it located. Search using Astro file manager but still could not find it.

    Any idea?

    Thanks

That’s weird. Because garmin voice pack is compiled in a package rather than separate media files. May I know which music player are you using? Also, a sample file name will help too.

Both winamp and default android music player will show the file.

The filename is 1 or 2 or 10 and so on..

Can you try pasting the .nomedia file to /system/app/ folder and see if the sound files still exist..Are you using a third party map?
